This is for newbies, right? :)

Ok so I am now renting a house with cable modem. Great. We are thinking about moving and are looking at homes out of the city, in rural areas. These areas are lucky to have phone service, nevermind broadband.

I had an idea of starting a WISP and providing the rural population with some options. However, most of the stuff I am reading is applicable to maybe a couple mile area. I'm talking more like maybe a 5 mile radius where there may be one house per 4 or 5 acres.

Some questions are: How would I get my initial high speed internet connection? (Is this called backhaul?) Is there an example network layout available to visualize what I might be getting into?  I'd like to see a visual graphic on every piece of equipment that will be needed, for me the provider as well as the customer. Not necessarily vendor specific...generic would be fine.

Thanks,

Ray
