WISP Authentication - PPPoE Maybe?

" Hello all,

I have small WISP operation that is growing quickly. As of right now all of our customers are assigned static private IP addresses and the entire network is bridged. As our network grows I feel this is going to become a nightmare to manage.

I am looking to moving to this model but I would appreciate your input if this is a good plan or if anyone knows anything better/easier.

Plan #1 - Have a PPPoE Server at our NOC along with a RADIUS server. Mostly routed network using EoIP.
Customer Router WaveRider CPE WaveRider CCU (Base) Router A (at tower) Router B (at NOC) PPPoE Router to Internet

Plan #2 - Have a PPPoE Server at each tower site, with RADIUS at our NOC.
Customer Router WaveRider CPE WaveRider CCU (Base) PPPoE Router A (at tower) NOC Router

I'm interested in using a PPPoE Server with a RADIUS server so we can do bandwidth throttling easier and make everything more simple to manage.

Any other ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

**Also, after posting I had another concern. How well will VoIP work over PPPoE and how can we implement QoS? We are in the process of becoming a CLEC and I'd like our network to reliably support VoIP when we get CLEC status.**"

"How many people actually host their own email server, and why? Why not use a 3rd party host? There are providers out there that will give you webspace and email hosting along with domain name registration etc, all for 1 very reasonable price, much less then paying someone to maintain the email server.

Just wondering if people have any thoughts on this."

Placing CPEs near power lines

Installation Techniques

" Hi all,

Does placing the CPE near power lines have any deteriorative effect on the radio?

I had installed a Senao CB3 in a customer's place and the power lines line ran quite close to the radio (about 5 mts horizontal distance). For apparently no reason, the radio would reset to factory defaults every now and then.

I had then replaced the radio with a HGA sub-$100 CPE and for about a month there wasn't any problem. Today the customer couldn't associate to our AP. On checking, I noticed that the CPE couldn't see our AP at all. I replaced the radio with another HGA sub-$100 CPE and things were fine again.

Anyway I have relocated the install location to be as far away from the power lines.

Anyone have a similar experience?"

" I have several ideas on what to charge customers for internet if I start a WISP but I wanted to know what you all charge yours.

Do you offer incentives? Like sign up a neighbor and get money back whatever way(free install, cheaper for so many months....)"

"I've encountered several obstacles where clients wish to use their wireless equipped laptops, or other desktop machines, with their new Internet connections throughout the homes. I've mostly wired these types of setups but some are just not realistic or the owner doesn't want any additional holes etc. My initial network is built on 802.11b/g. I already see alot of these types of soho routers/APs in homes from my own APs. Is it a bad idea to install a soho type router/AP at a clients home to share the connection? I obviously choose a different channel than the CPE installed but the devices do propagate fairly well?
Any thoughts?
Oh and in addtion, I stopped by RadioShack the other day for some other supplies and noticed a 15dbi "corner" antenna system.  This operated in the 802.11b/g arena and equated to a small sector like antenna. This could be a huge issue to come???"

"Hi! I have a question for all you installers here. What kind of tools/equipment would someone who is trying to get started as a private contractor doing installs for a WISP need? I'm pretty sure I've got some of the major stuff, but I'm looking for some of the things that I might have missed/not thought of. Any particular brands you recommend, or any other info would be helpful."

"I'm writing a paper describing semi-briefly the wireless Internet service industry. Would some of you provide a brief 1-2 paragraph description to get my mind rolling here? Many of you have much more in-sight than I do so I value your input."
